In this lesson, we step behind the camera to explore cinematography — the art of how films are shot and framed. You’ll learn a clear three-step framework for cinematography analysis:
1. Camera Position – shot types and angles, from extreme wides to close ups.
2. Composition – how framing tools like symmetry, the rule of thirds, and leading lines create meaning.
3. Camera Movement – pans, tracks, dollies, cranes, handheld shots and more, and how they shape our experience of a scene.
We’ll look at how cinematography can lean towards realism (like the handheld urgency of Children of Men) or formalism (like the symbolic choreography of an upside-down shot), and how these choices impact our interpretation.
