In 1906, a particularly brutal incidence of poaching in the Pribilof Islands of Alaska nearly led to war between Japan and the United States. 37 years before this incident, the Pribilofs were set aside as, potentially, the first marine protected area in the world. Later on, these islands would be the site of the world's first international wildlife protection treaty, giving them a surprisingly dense heritage when it comes to conservation history.
