On November 22, 1963, Kennedy was fatally shot while visiting Dallas, Texas. At the time, three former presidents were still living along with eleven men who would one day become president.

Herbert Hoover, who'd been president nearly thirty years prior, was 90 years old and well into retirement. Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower both give statements to the press and flew to Washington D.C. for the funeral. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson quickly took the Oath of Office while aboard Air Force One. Richard Nixon, Kennedy's former rival in the presidential election of 1960, had just flown from Dallas the morning of the shooting.
Gerald Ford, then a Michigan Republican congressman, was quickly assigned by Lyndon B. Johnson to the Warren Commission to investigate whether or not there was a greater conspiracy behind Kennedy's killing. Jimmy Carter, a freshman Democrat Senator, was on his peanut farm in Georgia. Ronald Reagan was in the final years of his acting career. George Bush was in the middle of a speech at a charity event when he got the news. Bill Clinton was in his fourth period Calculus class.
The reactions of the 21st Century presidents aren't as well known. There seems to be no information on how George W. Bush or Donald Trump reacted. Both were in high school. Barack Obama was only two years old. Joe Biden was in college and on campus. In a 2013 interview he described his reaction to the assassination in vivid detail.
Kennedy was the ninth United States President to die in office and the fourth to die via assassination. The other assassinated presidents, all Republicans, were Abraham Lincoln, James A. Garfield and William McKinley. Kennedy was the only Democrat. He was 46 years old and in the third year of his presidency. Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested for the assassination but never received a trial as he was killed in police custody by Jack Ruby.
