Each president was a unique individual in the right from vastly different backgrounds - some from poverty and some from wealth. James A. Garfield was raised by a single mother, Eliza Ballou Garfield, who was stricken with poverty. In contrast, another Republican born in another century, George W. Bush came from a well established political family with figures such as Samuel P. Bush and Prescott Bush.

Some presidents had happy marriages, others bad marriages and others had marriages marred in tragedy. Democrat President Jimmy Carter has enjoyed a marriage of over seventy years to Rosalynn Smith Carter while his successor Ronald Reagan became the first president to divorce when he separated from Jane Wyman. William McKinley had one of the most tragic marriages as his wife Ida Saxton was debilitated by elipesy, seizures and mental issues.

Some presidents would leave biological legacies lasting generations beyond their death while others would have no children at all. Tenth president John Tyler had the most children of any American president and, as of 2022, still has a living grandson, Harrison Ruffin Tyler. The father of the nation, George Washington had no children at all though he did adopt two stepchildren from his wife Martha's previous marriage. James Buchanan had no wife at all being the all president who lived as a lifelong bachelor.
