Nashin Mahtani, Director of Yayasan Peta Bencana (Disaster Map Foundation), is the winner of the 2025 WIN DRR Rising Star Award 🌟. As an architect and climate activist, she has led one of the largest open-source platforms for community-led disaster risk reduction — used today by over 200 million people across the Global South.

For the past eight years, Nashin has transformed DRR from top-down early warnings into a model of participatory risk governance. Her team’s real-time disaster mapping platforms in Indonesia and the Philippines enable residents to co-create and share verified risk information, supporting faster evacuations, quicker response, and stronger community coordination.

These platforms are now officially adopted by national and local governments and used by more than 900 humanitarian organisations, becoming some of the fastest and most reliable sources of real-time information during floods, storms, earthquakes, and other hazards.

Nashin also spearheaded a groundbreaking peer-to-peer logistics feature, allowing communities to request and share essential resources — strengthening mutual aid networks when formal response systems are overstretched.

Her impact is global: platform data now supports research and operations at Google, Uber, and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the model is expanding to Vietnam, India, Pakistan, and Panama.

This is the story of how inclusive, community-powered technology is reshaping resilience — and why Nashin Mahtani is one of the most promising leaders in disaster risk reduction today.
