🌊 Tsunamis are rare — but when they strike, they can be devastating.

In his message for World Tsunami Awareness Day 2025, Kamal Kishore, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, calls on all countries to invest in tsunami preparedness and resilience.

Twenty years after the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, global cooperation has saved countless lives through expanded early warning systems. But with rising sea levels, growing coastal populations, and increasing economic exposure, disaster risks are changing — and preparedness must evolve too.

As the United Nations marks 80 years of global cooperation, it’s time to build on progress and ensure every country is tsunami ready.
