Minimalism changed my life.

I recently embraced minimalism, unexpectedly. It started with replacing my couch. But when I decided to go for a fresh start and also paint the walls, I had to store all the clutter away to free up the walls. When it was done, I was super excited: the apartment felt so fresh, so light!

There was no going back: since then, I’ve only reintroduced the essentials and things I genuinely care about. And going minimal has done wonders for my mindset. I noticed that removing clutter creates more space for things you really care about. With the clutter gone, those items can really take center stage and shine! In that sense, less is indeed more.

Also, the empty space literally created headspace. In his book ‘Goodbye Things’, Japanese minimalist Fumio Sasaki introduces the concept of the silent to-do list. It basically means that our possessions want to be cared for, and they tell us that every time we look at them. If we cut down on our possessions though, these silent messages will become fewer as well. Prioritizing these messages then gets easier, and if we do receive a message or two, we have the capacity to respond right away.

Finally, adopting a minimalist lifestyle pushed me to live with more intention. Instead of running on autopilot half of the day, I now do my best to give the thing I’m doing in the moment all of my attention.

In this video, I explain how minimalism has changed my life. Let me know in the comments below how minimalism has impacted yours!
