Ibn Khaldun’s political skills were utilized by various rulers. He had proven himself to be especially adept at dealing with Arab & Berber tribes. In fact, starting in 1375 he even lived with a Berber tribe for more than three years in modern-day Algeria. Using the isolation and protection offered to him, during this period he started writing his well-known Muqadimmah, which was the introduction to his multi-volume universal history. This time spent with tribal society would likely have helped him form his understanding of ‘Asabiyya’. This is a type of social bond, which is characterized by a heavy dependence upon each other. It is much more likely to develop in harsh environments such as a desert or a steppe because survival as a group is more expedient than surviving on your own. In his ruminations, the Asabiyya involved the drive to conquer as well. Another factor he stressed was the centrality of religious zeal. So when you put all of these attributes together you can understand why he thought a group with all of these different traits would be much more likely to succeed. This was best exemplified by the rapid expansion of the Rashidun Caliphate during the 7th century.
