Iran's historical grandeur failed to translate in the modern period, due to European imperialism and incompetent rule. Thus forcing different elements of society to make their discontent known. Amongst these, the Ulama were often the leading force. This was especially true in the Islamic revolution of 1979, as different ideologies and groups banded together to topple the Shah and institute a more just and fair system that was rooted somewhat in democratic ideals. After the Shah’s deposition in January 1979, many of the revolutionaries watched in horror as Ayatollah Khomeini stole their dreams by forcefully establishing a theocratic state.
