Starting off from their humble origins on the frontier of north western Anatolia, by 1389 the Ottomans had aggressively expanded their realm across Anatolia and the Balkans. Their leader Bayezid the Thunderbolt was now poised to extend his conquests in all directions; even the fabled city of Constantinople was caught in the crosshairs of Ottoman ambition. But emerging from the steppes of Central Asia, the legendary Turco-Mongolian conqueror Timur would momentarily put an end to all of that. What followed next was a critical chapter in the Empire’s history which saw it confronted by the prospect of its own mortality and the need to bounce back from near destruction. A civil war between Bayezid’s sons would plunge the empire in to chaos, but the Ottomans would remarkably emerge from it even stronger than before, creating a platform for Mehmed the Conqueror to make the Ottomans the most powerful empire of his day.
