Here's my bulletproof recipe for hatching brine shrimp with the Ziss hatchery (more details below).

🧾 RECIPE FOR HATCHING BRINE SHRIMP
0) If you don't know how to install the Ziss brine shrimp hatchery, read this blog post: aquariumcoop.com/blogs/aquarium/baby-brine-shrimp
1) Fill Ziss hatchery with water all the way up to 1.5 inches from the top. (Don't dechlorinate it.) Leave a gap from the top so that the popping bubbles don't stick eggs onto the lid.
2) Add 2 tablespoons of marine salt and up to 1 tablespoon of brine shrimp eggs. (Marine salt gets me a much better hatch rate than aquarium salt because of all the extra minerals it contains.) Tap the brine shrimp spoon in the water to shake off all the eggs that stick to it. Store the rest of the brine shrimp eggs in the freezer (or in the fridge if you plan on using them this week).
3) Add equipment (heater and air pump) and close lid. (After testing lots of heaters, I've found a small, tube-shaped heater is best because it doesn't impede the water circulation and cause eggs to get stuck.) Plug in the air pump, and then plug in the heater after 10-30 minutes of temperature acclimation. I set my heater to 82°F.
4) After 24 hours, unplug and remove the equipment and lid. Rinse everything to remove any eggs.
5) Turn off the room lights and shine an LED light or flashlight at the base of the hatchery. This causes the brine shrimp to swim downwards toward the valve at the bottom.
6) Open the valve, and drain out the brine shrimp into a container or through a sieve. If the sieve starts to overflow, temporarily shut off the valve and press the bottom of the screen lightly with your fingers. This breaks the surface tension or something and gets the water to flow through again. Resting the sieve on the sink drain also helps to drain the water more quickly.
7) Feed the shrimp to your fish.
8) Wash the hatchery and scrub with a bottle brush if needed. Wash the sieve with warm/hot water to melt off any salt on the screen.
9) Start at the beginning with Step 1 and repeat the steps to hatch out the next batch of brine shrimp.
