This weekend, I'm trimming the tall, curved forms thrown last week. Bowls with indented tops but with a lower half that's more of a roughly formed vessels that'll be trimmed EXCESSIVELY during this video, into far more refined, elegant shapes. The ease of trimming these partly rests in how well they're dried out to leather hard. Rushed and in a space with drafts, one side of the bowl could dry out considerably more than the rest of the bowl, creating an undulation that you then have to trim around as you work, which is a pain. Thus, these forms are dried very slowly over a long period of time to best retain the original, thrown shape.
As always, I discuss each step along the way, from how to properly brace your hands as you trim, the importance of wheel-speed and vigour and finally, how I hollow out such an expansive foot, that's where the real tricky work is.
Al in all, I end up with two shapes I very happy with, although I can already foresee the troubles that'll arise in glazing such tall forms. Thank you so much for watching the video, I appreciate you taking your precious time to watch!
