How do you reinvent yourself when the entire metal landscape is changing?
In 1992, Flotsam and Jetsam released Cuatro, an album that marked a major turning point for the Arizona thrash metal band. After Troy Gregory's departure, the band brought in Jason Ward, a bassist whose playing and songwriting helped push the group in a new musical direction.
But the lineup change was only the beginning.
On Cuatro, Flotsam and Jetsam moved away from the blistering thrash of their earlier records and embraced slower tempos, heavier grooves, more melodic songwriting, and a much more polished production style. Producer Neil Kernon helped create a massive, modern sound that allowed the rhythm section and vocals to take on a much larger role.
And then there's one of the album's biggest surprises: Chris Cornell of Soundgarden co-wrote the lyrics to "The Message." It's an unlikely collaboration that perfectly captures the strange musical crossroads of 1992, when thrash metal was struggling to survive while grunge and alternative metal were taking over the mainstream.
