You're a new rider, on your motorbike, scooter, moped or whatever, and you're let out on your own ....... not having ever driven a car or maybe only got around by getting a lift or public transport. Being honest with yourself, you'll admit not having much real world experience or what's known as 'road sense'. Now that's not a criticism - it's just fact. Road sense isn't taught, it's learnt over many miles, days, weeks, months and years. So just how safe are you? Do you just initially survive by luck? Riding around hoping that no one cuts you up? Or swerves in to your lane or pulls out on you? If that happens, are you ready? Would you see it in time to be prepared? Here's a very small example of what I'm doing on every journey/commute, what I think about, the 'what-ifs', the questions I ask. Is there a car going to come from that junction? Is that truck about to change lane, has that van driver seen me? Am I too close? Am I hidden from view? Am I going to get home in one piece?
