What happens when learning extends beyond the classroom and into the community?
At East Tennessee State University, community-engaged learning empowers students to tackle real-world challenges while making a meaningful difference.
In January 2026, ETSU was announced as one of only 277 colleges and universities to earn the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, a national designation recognizing institutions that integrate community engagement into their mission and operations.
Community-engaged learning at ETSU goes beyond the classroom through service-learning courses, Alternative Breaks, Service Saturdays, and community partnerships that prepare students to lead with purpose. From supporting regional recovery efforts after Hurricane Helene to addressing community needs across Appalachia, ETSU students gain hands-on experience while developing leadership skills, building lasting partnerships, and serving their communities.
At the heart of ETSU's community-engaged learning model is the “Core Four”: learning directly connected to course content; reciprocal partnerships that benefit both students and community partners; critical reflection that deepens the learning experience; and student learning outcomes that help students grow academically, professionally and personally.
Explore how ETSU connects classroom learning with real-world community needs to create meaningful educational experiences for students while strengthening the region.
