In this powerful segment, Dr. Andrew Joyner, Tennessee State Climatologist and East Tennessee State University professor, breaks down the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene on East Tennessee, Appalachia, and Western North Carolina.

Dr. Joyner explains how the unique Appalachian Mountains terrain contributed to the worst flooding many have ever seen. With 15-25 inches of rain falling at the headwaters of rivers like the Pigeon, Nolichucky, and French Broad, the floodwaters surged with unprecedented speed and power. Homes were swept away, infrastructure was crushed, and areas outside traditional flood zones were caught off guard.

This segment highlights why this storm caused catastrophic flooding and destruction, affecting communities beyond the 100-year floodplain. To hear more about the factors behind Helene’s devastation, the technology used to assess damage, and the path toward resilience, watch the full video series Rising with Hope: Appalachia After Hurricane Helene.
