From silent band rooms and an empty practice field to the bustling streets of New York City, “The ETSU Marching Bucs: A Comeback Story” chronicles the remarkable comeback of the East Tennessee State University Marching Bucs, culminating in their unforgettable journey to the world’s most prestigious stage: the 2024 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Silent for more than a decade, the marching band program at ETSU had vanished - lacking uniforms, instruments, and students. However, in 2014, Dr. Joe Moore returned to his alma mater with a bold vision: to rebuild the Marching Bucs from the ground up in conjunction with the return of football to campus. What began as a dream transformed into a movement, fueled by perseverance, Blue and Gold pride, and the belief that music can unite and uplift.

A decade later, the Marching Bucs boast more than 360 members and have become a nationally recognized force, proudly representing the Appalachian region with heart and precision.

This full-length documentary features never-before-seen footage and heartfelt and personal stories from the students and staff who made this journey possible. From the majorettes and color guard lighting up the stage at Radio City Music Hall to early morning NBC camera blocking in Herald Square, and a rainy Thanksgiving morning that could not dampen Buc spirit — the path to the parade was filled with unforgettable moments.

Just weeks before the big moment, Hurricane Helene ripped through Western North Carolina, parts of East Tennessee, and Southwest Virginia in September 2024, devastating homes, displacing families, and leaving many with nothing. Several members of the Marching Bucs and their families were directly affected by the storm — yet many still stepped up, volunteering their time to gather supplies, support recovery efforts, and serve the communities they proudly call home. With their unshakable spirit and deep sense of purpose, the Marching Bucs family kept pushing forward — not just to perform, but to represent the Southern Appalachian region and every person who believed in them.

This is more than just a story about a band; it’s a journey of resilience, renewal, and rising to the occasion. If you love a comeback story, are inspired by the magic of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, or believe in the transformative power of the arts, this story is for you!
