Vance Crowe | How do you have a hard conversation with your boss? @VanceCrowePodcast | Uploaded July 2024 | Updated October 2024, 41 minutes ago.
Disagreeing with your boss is tough, especially if they're insecure.
Instead of avoiding these conflicts, try mirroring. Begin the conversation by summarizing their perspective respectfully and optimistically. Then ask if your understanding is correct. If they say you're missing the point, listen while they clarify and repeat what you heard them say in as high fidelity as possible. Do this mirroring until you both agree that you understand their perspective.
This creates goodwill because they'll feel heard.
Next, offer your perspective. If they immediately dismiss your idea, instead of fighting or giving up, ask, what did you hear me say?
You're asking them to mirror your perspective, and when they do, it often reveals where the breakdown is. Now you have the choice to either explain your point again, correct the misunderstanding, or recognize that they aren't going to change.
Mirroring helps overcome conflicts born from insecurities. It makes people reevaluate their perspectives so that even if they don't change their mind in the moment, they often will eventually.
