Atatürk saw the world in 1923 for what it was – dominated by Europeans. So as a leader, he wanted to give his people the best chance of both defending themselves and making progress. And who was the best example of that at the time? The West.
The caliphate — abolished. The sultanate — gone. The religious courts — dismantled. Arabic script replaced with Latin. Women given the vote — in 1934, before France, before Italy. Universities modernised. The economy restructured. Turkey became a well-respected state within geopolitics as a functioning secular democracy, however imperfect; joining NATO; becoming a military powerhouse regionally.

Atatürk is one of the most controversial figures in modern Islamic history, largely because of his secularising drive. He banned the fez, replaced Arabic script, abolished the Khilafah, and dragged Turkey kicking and screaming into the 20th century. As a result many consider him to be somewhat of a traitor; whilst others see him as a visionary leader who did what he needed to do. What do I think? Watch the video!
