Amir Abdur Rahman Khan had come to power 20 years before in the midst of a British invasion of Afghanistan and since then, dominated every corner of his realm. First he had to put down the popular war hero and his cousin, Ayyub Khan, who was challenging him for his throne. Then came all the different groups and ethnicities rebelling against his attempts to centralize authority across his state. The Ghilzai Pashtuns, the key northern province of Turkestan and the Hazaras were amongst those who felt the brunt of the Iron Amir’s brutal methods. With the Islamisation of Kafiristan, Abdur Rahman had asserted complete control of his entire realm. All this would come to greatly benefit his son and successor Habibullah. The subsequent succession was one of the very few peaceful changes of power in modern Afghan history. Considering his country was not fully independent, Habibullah had to re-affirm the treaty his father had with the British which allowed the latter to control Afghanistan’s foreign policy.
