Ataturk changed Turkey in unimaginable ways. Upon gaining independence after WWI, he set about to vigorously modernise his country. Customs and traditions that had endured for centuries were gotten rid of so that Turkey could modernise in a similar way that European countries had. The most prominent reforms of Ataturk concerned the nation's relationship with Islam. A staunch advocate of secularism, Ataturk sought to relegate the role of religion to the private sphere.
