With his domestic affairs under control, the Amir sought to conclusively fix his border with the British. Peshawar, once the winter capital of Afghanistan, was now in British India. The Amir sought to regain as much of this land back as possible, given the historic connection as well as the area being inhabited mainly by his ethnic brethren, the Pashtuns. For the British, retaining this territory was absolutely crucial as it held key passes which have historically been used in invasions of India. The Amir was also actively involved in strengthening his hand in the tribal areas which were de facto British territory. The Afridis, known as the guardians of the Khyber Pass, held warm relations with the Amir and even offered allegiance to him. Despite the Amir’s efforts and desire to bring the Pashtuns living in the eastern frontier region under the writ of Afghanistan, the British categorically rebuffed any such attempt.
