Napoleon’s 1798 invasion of Egypt was a wake-up call, symbolized by French cannons destroying Mamluks on camelback. Though short-lived, his expedition sparked an intellectual revival movement known as Al-Nahda. One of its pioneers, the Egyptian Rifa’a Al-Tahtawi, lived in France for five years as part of a student mission sent to Europe to learn its secrets. He praised French society’s enlightenment values while maintaining their compatibility with Islam. The spread of print media furthered this movement, uniting Arabs through language and culture while emphasizing Arab identity over sectarian divides. Figures like the Lebanese journalist and novelist Jurji Al-Zaydan popularized Arab history through accessible literature. He was only one in a long list of Arab intellectuals across the Middle East who helped build the founding blocks of modern Arab consciousness, and in the process, Nationalism.
