How a Khalīfah Is Appointed ?

During the 30 years of Khilāfah on the Minhāj of Nubuwwah, the appointment of the Khulafāʾ took place in three recognised ways:

1️⃣ General consultation of the Muslim community (Shūrā ʿĀmmah)
This was how the Khilāfah of Sayyidunā Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq and Sayyidunā ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib was established.

2️⃣ Specific consultation by a selected group (Shūrā Khāṣṣah)
This occurred in the case of Sayyidunā ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān, when Sayyidunā ʿUmar appointed a council of six senior Ṣaḥābah who chose the Khalīfah from among themselves.

3️⃣ Succession nominated by the previous Khalīfah
This was the case with Sayyidunā ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, whom Sayyidunā Abū Bakr appointed as his successor.

These three methods together define how the rightly guided Khilāfah was established.
