The Shūrā That Shaped Khilāfah

As Sayyidunā ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه lay injured, he established a model of leadership rooted in consultation, not inheritance. He appointed six noble Ṣaḥābah, all beloved to the Prophet ﷺ, to choose the next Khalīfah among themselves—clearly refusing to pass authority to his own son.

Through this, we see that Khilāfah in the era of the Khulafāʾ al-Rāshidīn was established in three legitimate ways:
1️⃣ General consultation of the Ummah
2️⃣ Consultation of a specific appointed council (Shūrā)
3️⃣ Nomination by the previous Khalīfah

This principled approach preserved unity, justice, and trust—and remained the foundation of Islamic governance for centuries.
