How can a clamp-meter measure AC- and DC-current without interrupting the circuit?

In AC-mode it works as a current-transformer.
In DC-Mode a hall-effect sensor is used.
A DC clamp-meter is useful for the electronic hobbyists-lab only if it goes down to 1mA resolution or better.
