What drives ocean heating and global warming? Is it greenhouse gases (GHGs) as the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) says in their 'consensus' report of Sept. 17, 2025? This report was issued in rebuttal to the July 23, 2025, report of the Climate Working Group of the US Department of Energy which presented scientific views that carbon dioxide (CO2) was not the main driver of climate change. At the time, the Trump administration was considering a rescission of the 2007 US EPA CO2 Endangerment Finding, which claimed that the health and the climate of Americans was at risk due to GHGs - especially from vehicles. That CO2 Endangerment Finding led to layers of costly regulations, and was the impetus for the contrived compliance of electric vehicle (EV) mandates. In the end, on Feb. 12, 2026, the Trump administration did repeal the CO2 Endangerment Finding, but on legal and scientific grounds unrelated to either of these reports. These competing climate change reports generated much press and controversy. One part of the NASEM report referred to the 'blobs' of ocean heating as being driven by GHGs. Researchers Prof. Wyss Yim and Dr. Arthur Viterito have argued for years that ocean heating is largely affected by subsurface geothermal activity. In fact, a Sept. 19, 2025, article posted on the Friends of Science Society's blog, was about "The Ignored Geothermal Hotspot off the Kamchatka Peninsula". This video explainer discusses the competing narratives of NASEM and the DOE Climate Working Group, and the implications of the rescission of the US EPA CO2 Endangerment Finding for Canada. Canada's Social Cost of Carbon (SCC), upon which carbon taxes are valued, was directly linked to the US EPA calculations of the SCC - which no longer exists. Then the video explores Dr. Arthur Viterito's theory that Mid-Ocean Spreading Zone Seismic Activity (MOSZSA) has a large influential on ocean and global warming. Bottom line, if carbon dioxide is not the main driver of ocean or global warming, then carbon taxes and efforts to reach Net Zero are putting money and energy in the wrong place.
