Amidst the Stockton & Darlington Railway 200 celebrations, Darlington Hopetown opened its doors, providing visitors the opportunity to view parts of the site normally closed off, with a number of guest locomotives on display for the crowds to enjoy, making use of the recently added mainline connection.
Over the bicentenary weekend, LNER A4 Pacfic 60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley' would sit alongside fellow Eastern 4-6-2, new build Peppercorn A1 60163 'Tornado', the latter having been completed on-site in 2008, with both locos sat outside the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust's new workshop, along with recently restored Great Eastern Railway "Coffee Pot" 209 Class No.229 and Austerity Tank No.15 'Earl David'. Inside the workshop was the A1SLT's current new build project: LNER Gresley P2 2007 'Prince of Wales', with the engine's rolling chassis, tender and cylinders available for up-close viewing.
For fans of more modern traction, BR Blue liveried DC Rail 56045 and classmate 56103, as well as GB Railfreight's Railway 200 liveried 66710 'Karen Harrison' were also displayed out in the yard. Visitors could also visit the workshop of the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group, offering the chance to view work currently being undertaken of BR(E) built J72 Tank 69023 'Joem' and Hunslet Austerity No.3777. The Darlington Railway Preservation Society would also open their doors, showcasing their collection of industrial engines, in addition to Darlington built BR Standard 2MT 78018 on display outside, with the locomotive visiting from the Great Central Railway.
