It doesn’t matter how beautiful or expensive your video is, if you don’t share it effectively, it was a waste of time and money. So how do you promote and share your video so that it effectively furthers your mission on a low, or no, budget? Every successful video outreach campaign pivots around the big question - who needs to see it? Go back to the goal of your video and where it fits in your overall outreach. Are you trying to reach people who don’t yet know about your organization? Those who are considering your services? Or maybe dedicated followers and donors? This is your target audience. You need to share your video in the way that most effectively reaches them. So you need to identify the overarching characteristics of this group of people. And here’s a pro tip - our clients who have the most effective sharing strategy regularly survey their audience. Surveying a sample of the people that you want to reach gives you solid insight on their characteristics and preferences. Surveying eliminates the guesswork and puts you on a solid path to promotion. For starters, you need to know the approximate age of this target audience. This will determine where you can most effectively share your content based on how they typically watch videos. For Boomers and older, use TV ads because this group is very much still into traditional video channels. If you want to reach Boomers and some Millennials, Facebook is the place that they are watching videos. For Millennials and some Gen Z, Instagram is where to post your videos. If you want to focus on Gen Z, TicTok is the place to be. Next, go back and think about their journey with your organization - does your target audience know you even exist, are they considering your services, or are they committed followers? If you want to reach fresh faces and make them aware of your organization, you must invest in paid advertising because, by definition, these people don’t follow your page. Paid ads will prompt the social channel to show your video to new people, and only costs a fraction of a cent per view. If you want to reach someone who is considering your service, they’re likely searching for it on Google. Video is extremely SEO-friendly, but you need to make sure Google knows what your video is about. Take the time to write a text description that uses words your audience may be Googling, and make sure to use closed captions so the search engine knows what is said in your video. Then, consider investing in ads to give Google that extra incentive to share your content. If you want to garner support among followers, use social media, but also consider sending them an email blast or text campaign so that they’re certain to see your new video. Use free tools like Mailchimp or Constant Contact to store your supporter’s email addresses and send that promotional email to showcase your latest video. The best part is that all these tools track how your video is performing, so you can gauge and refine your strategy over time. Finally, research your target audience’s media consumption habits. Do they tend to be online early in the morning, or at night? This will help you know when to post your video. Find out what images, descriptions, and titles resonate with them. Research what other pages they follow - then gradually build a relationship with these pages by liking and commenting on their content, and eventually ask for a collaboration or a shoutout. One of our clients very effectively uses what I would call the influencers of their community. Now, “influencers” is a trendy buzz word in marketing, but at its core, it simply means tapping into the power of social proof. If someone sees your video shared by someone that they trust or relate to, they are more likely to watch it. Our client identified a few key individuals in their community who were already engaging with their content and had comparatively large social followings. Then, they simply asked these people to be advocates and to share the group’s content regularly. This entirely free strategy not only validated these supporters and made them even more committed followers, but it made the group’s reach and engagement skyrocket. Focusing on who you want to reach is key. Think about who needs to see your video, then share your video in the way that most effectively reaches them… and you’re guaranteed to further your goals with low or no budget.
