HONEYSUCKLE ROSE was a natural choice when Neville Dickie and Jack Hutton played a one-hour set of Fats Waller tunes at the Grand International Ragtime/Jasstime Festival at Alexandria Bay, N.Y. on Saturday, May 28, 2016. Jack played the first chorus the way Waller did in a laid-back 1943 recording. Neville jumped in for the second chorus with up-tempo Bob Zurke improvisations, followed by a bagpipes riff. No one looked more delighted by the instant lesson than Jack who played the bagpipes riff later on that same evening. Jack says he learns from Neville every time he sits down opposite the English stride legend. That's what makes the Alexandria Bay festival special year after year: musicians learning from other musicians.
