Black Walnut Honeycomb Masonic Gavel with London Pattern Handle and Black Walnut & Epoxy Honeycomb Block Set
Overall dimensions: 11-1/4” long, 2-3/8” wide, 4-1/2” deep.
Handle only dimensions: 8-3/4” long, 1-1/4” large diameter, 11/16” small diameter.
For gavel head, black walnut cut into hexagonal blanks on table saw. Glue-up into block with gold tinted epoxy. Cut, shaped, and chamfered (30 degree). Sanded to 600 grit and finished with dark walnut danish oil, then Ack’s abrasive paste and carnauba wax. 2” diameter insert for hard maple token with custom image burned in (not shown, reproduced with designers permission for the recipient). Token coated with Designer Epoxy ArtCast and set in place. Insert for handle drilled 1” into gavel head.
For gavel handle, black walnut cut into larger hexagonal blank on table saw. Turned on wood lathe into London Pattern Handle. Drilled out to accept 8” long steel tube for improved structure. Tube friction fit into handle. Sanded to 600 grit and finished with dark walnut danish oil, then Ack’s abrasive paste and carnauba wax. Circle wedge and epoxy used to mount handle to gavel head.
For gavel block, an off-cut from the gavel head used as the center piece sanded to 600 grit and finished with dark walnut danish oil. Hexagonal blanks used to form the perimeter and piece infilled with epoxy (clear, then bronze gold). Sanded to 600 grit and finished with Ack’s abrasive paste and carnauba wax.
