Homestead SUCCESS! – Milling Lumber & Baking Bread
Some days on the homestead are all about persistence paying off. In today’s video, Saundra is in the kitchen tackling a challenge she’s worked on for years — baking bread. With a new recipe, the result is a beautiful, golden loaf that’s as good as it looks. 🍞
Meanwhile, Chuck is at the sawmill, milling more lumber for our timber frame store build. He shares the details of how the mill works, how he approaches a log, and the strategy behind getting the most useful beams from each cut. 🪵
Together, these moments remind us that homesteading is about learning, trying, and celebrating the successes, whether in the kitchen or at the sawmill.
✨ In this video you’ll see:

French Bread Recipe
1 cup warm water
2 tsp active dry yeast
1 tablespoon white sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tablespoon oil
2.5-3 cups all purpose flour
1 egg beaten
In a large bowl combine water, yeast and sugar, let sit until foamy (around 5 min). Mix in salt, oil and 2 cups of flour. Stir until just combined. Add half cup of flour at a time until the dough pulls away from the bowl. On a floured surface knead dough for 5-7 minutes. Oil a clean bowl, place dough ball in bowl, cover with plastic wrap. Let rise for 45min-1 hour or until doubled in size. Flatten dough out into a rectangle, then roll into a log, fold the ends under the log. Cut 4-5 slices across the top of the dough 1-2 inches deep. Let rise for 1 hour. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Bake for 20-25 minutes then brush bread with egg wash. Bake an additional 2-3 minutes. Enjoy!
