Katie Cooks and Crafts | Holy (half) Cow! ~ Meat Haul @KatieCooksandCrafts | Uploaded January 2017 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
Here is what I got from my half cow. This is 100% grass fed and from a local family farm. I anticipate this should feed my family (2 adults, 2 small kids) for a full year, if not more.
What I got (347 hanging weight)
about 220 pounds of meat not including tongue, heart, bones, etc
84 pounds ground hamburger (38%)
55 pounds steaks (25%)
60 pounds roasts (27%)
21 pounds misc meat (shanks, short ribs, cubed steak) (10%)
plus
25 pounds misc parts (liver, heart, bones, tongue)
I paid $4.25/lb hanging weigh and about $6.75/lb for the meat (not including the misc parts like liver, heart, etc
In my area, the cheapest grass fed beef (ground beef) is at least that much and the steaks and roasts are much more.
This did NOT fit in a 5 cubic ft freezer like I was expecting. maybe a smaller half would but I would think a 7-10 cubic ft freezer would be better. Also be sure to have 4-5 large coolers when you go to pick up your order :)
