Bottom line: will I be back? Absolutely. Was I blown away? no, not really.

Confession time, I did not like Aldi when they first opened in my area. I had heard from family who shopped at Aldi in Germany that is was this mecca of groceries and housewares and when I first shopped there all I saw was generic food in unattractive packages stacked in cardboard boxes. Over time Aldi has grown on me, I count on their consistently low prices on the staples we use most (milk! Produce! Baking essentials! Cheese!) but to be honest I usually leave Aldi in a bad mood due to long lines and the hassle of inserting a quarter to get a cart while wrangling 2 kids. If Lidl can keep lines down and be slightly less surly than Aldi employees they would score major points with me.
As for Lidl, it has a lot of the same pros (and cons) as Aldi. Carts are free (and can be picked up and returned in the parking lot, HALLELUJAH!) but bring (or buy) your own bags and you pack them yourself. The store is bright and clean with nice wide aisles (3 cart widths wide!) and the people are really friendly. The produce section was mostly conventionally grown, and I didn't see country of origin listed on their signs. Everything looked fresh and there were plenty of deals. There is a bakery with some very interesting looking things, both savory and sweet. There are no ingredients or nutritional info listed nor on the website so I probably won't use the bakery. The groceries are mostly house brand (aka store brand/generic) but I haven't found anything that I tried to be lacking. The housewares/seasonal section was large but a lot of the items looked like cheap knock offs. The veggie slicer shredder I got works well enough for a $17 item, I sort of wish I just saved my money and gotten an Presto brand Salad Shooter. The frozen food was mostly processed foods. The frozen veggies were in small 12 ounce packages but the same price as 1lb packs I see at other stores. I will be shopping there more as time goes on so if you have any questions, leave them in the comments and I can check next time I go.

Probably the best part about Lidl is there are little kid size carts, like at Trader Joes and other stores but there is an adult height grab handle to help guide them. No more bending over to keep your speed demon under control GENIUS!
