ABOUT THE WORK
Hollow Knight: Silksong, the widely anticipated sequel to the 2017 indie platformer Hollow Knight, was released in June 2025 after years of suspense. Developed by small Australian studio Team Cherry, Silksong grew out of a planned expansion to the original Hollow Knight, blossoming into a full sequel with far larger scope than its predecessor. Building on the critically acclaimed soundtrack of Hollow Knight, composer Christopher Larkin was brought back for Silksong, exploring a more orchestral sound featuring raw strings, echoing chimes, and haunting choral writing that evokes the decaying civilization at the core of the game’s plot and the once-gleaming citadel at its center. This arrangement is a brief tour through that soundscape, beginning with Lace, an agile fencer whose theme combines a constantly shifting groove with punchy rhythms and a soaring melody, quickly giving way to Phantom, a high-energy theme prominently featuring powerful organ solos and frantically driving accompaniment, and the dramatic dance of Trobbio’s theme. A soft held note carries us into Choral Chambers, the elegant and lilting theme of its namesake area in the game, swelling from solo piano to the piercing call of the oboes over a lush accompaniment of soft strings and upper winds, culminating in a dissonant crescendo that resolves into Cogwork Dancers, a piece of clockwork choreography undergirded by the accelerating tick-tock of castanets. The music relentlessly speeds up as the Dancers’ movements become more frenzied, driving forward into the lopsided groove of Crust King Khann, a warrior whose theme spotlights brass melodies and sharp articulations building into a triumphant fanfare. Finally, the arrangement closes with Awakening, a symphonic tour de force woven through with the main Silksong motif, where monumental dynamic shifts and sweeping melodic gestures culminate in a fitting finale to an incredibly significant moment in the game’s narrative (no spoilers!).
