New Years in Edinburgh is a huge and amazing 3 day event called Hogmanay. Over 100,000 people show up to enjoy numerous events which take place all around the city including concerts, the Torchlight Procession, the Princes Street Party, Scot:Lands, Sprogmanay, the Old Town Ceilidh, the Loony Dook and much more.
Day 1: The Torchlight Procession opens Hogmanay and was so much fun! It started on the Royal Mile, headed down towards Princes Street and up to Calton Hill where it ended with a bonfire and an awesome fireworks show! Our friends watched while riding the ferris wheel. It was £12 a torch with a minimum of 1 torch per group and £3 to march. Over 20,000 torches were sold with proceeds going to Unicef!
Day 2: NEW YEARS EVE! It was this day last year that Joe and I flew into Scotland. Last year we watched the fireworks from the other side of the castle so we didn't get to see the lasers or how truly amazing it was! The Street Party limits tickets to 100,000 people after setting a Guinness Book World Record in 1966 for having the world's largest new years party! Between 300,000 and 400,000 people attended! But even today, the Edinburgh Hogmanay celebrations are among the largest in the world.
Beginning at 8 pm a short fireworks display goes off over Princes Street Gardens every hour on the hour leading up to midnight. The cannon is fired at Edinburgh Castle at the stroke of midnight, followed by the night's biggest fireworks display.
We got to spend our New Years Eve with friends and coworkers overlooking the street party and the castle.
DAY 3: On January 1st, we had full intentions to head to South Queensferry to watch crazy people in costumes jump into the freezing waters of the Firth of Forth (AKA: The Loony Dook). This event started in 1986 by three locals who thought the arctic plunge would be a good hangover cure. Sadly, we were a bit too hungover from the night before to go....
HOWEVER, I was able to make it to the Scot:Lands event with a couple friends from Australia. Scot:Lands is a kind of treasure hunt to different venues around Old Town Edinburgh. Most venues had an artistic performance like a band or poem reading. When you were ready to go, you would spin a wheel of numbers. The number matched with another venue and you'd receive a card with directions there. You didn't know what would take place at each venue, so it was always a fun surprise!
