One of the topics of discussion at HiPEAC 2026 in Krakow, Poland, thisyear was around using AI for chip hardware design. In this conversation with Barcelona Computing Centre in Spain, Pablo Valerio of EE Times talks to Teresa Cervero, Leading Research Engineer at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, and Stefan Wallentowitz, Professor at HM Munich University of Applied Sciences, about some of the myths and opportunities around this topic.

They highlight that "it's about being more productive, not replacing design engineers", and that using AI for hardware design can help write RTL code with supervision.

And for students and startups, open source EDA tools can remove the barriers to entry which would otherwise be a factor as a result if the high cost of standard EDA tools.

And for students, it's a way of learning - by watching how the tools do the design and then using that to create curiosity.
