An International research team of scientists have uncovered the secret behind the narwhal’s famous twisted tusk using advanced 3D X-ray technology. Researchers discovered the tusk contains two opposing spirals, with the outer layer twisting left and the inner layer twisting right. The unusual double-spiral structure makes the tusk more resistant to bending and twisting, but scientists still do not know exactly what narwhals use it for. The findings could also help inspire stronger materials for construction and medicine.
