In the beginning…
STEP 1: Pick one pottying spot, like a top hat potty or a bowl.
STEP 2: Keep baby diaper-free for short periods to observe.
STEP 3: Watch for tiny signals like squirming or sudden stillness.
STEP 4: Offer the potty after waking up or feeding.
STEP 5: Hold baby in a comfortable EC position.
STEP 6: Say “psss” for pee or grunt for poop while baby goes.
STEP 7: If nothing happens, try again later with no stress.
STEP 8: Use a backup like a cloth or disposable diaper.
STEP 9: Repeat daily and trust the process.
Then when he began walking…
STEP 1: decide it’s time to stop using daytime diapers cold turkey (for us, 9.5 months old when he began walking and I could no longer stomach the diaper-changing-wrestle-dance 😟)
STEP 2: Offer the potty but let baby take the lead.
STEP 3: Start using underwear full-time.
STEP 4: Encourage them to tell you when they need to go.
STEP 5: Stop reminding as often and let baby initiate more often.
STEP 6: Teach them how to pull pants up and down on their own.
STEP 7: Expect some accidents, but don’t make a big deal out of them.
STEP 8: Keep potty time part of the daily routine, just like eating and sleeping!
STEP 9: Celebrate when baby is fully independent!
