The qualifications list for bishops and deacons really should be qualifications for all believers. And not just qualifications per se but the new life of Christ living within us. Each feature mentioned should already be active and at work in everyone at some degree of growth. These are all elements of the character of the new birth. The will being exercised in all paths of this life.
Yes, it is necessary that these offices demand purity for good reason. Purity is always a requirement in those who are over other's lives. I have read these passages for decades. Yet today I realized that this must not be only for a "select" few, or those who stand above the rest respectively.
Because though an individual can pass the check list of requirements, they can still be unqualified by the Holy Ghost, the Searcher, who can see sins beneath. Sins of disposition, secret sins, and "darkness in part."
Should these few only stand as a special class and the body of Christ be anything less? Should this list stand only for leadership candidates alone? Sadly and unfortunately this has long been the case. Many stand afar off never thinking they are good enough, they never go any further.
Never try to attain to these twenty-nine requirements in efforts for position. Only those who in pure-heart love for Jesus Christ have His life-flow in them naturally. Never in any earthly office. Your aim will be much higher.
Love is at the deepest root of all these things. Walk in lowliness and humbleness in all your journey Home to Heaven Land.
