The band formed when Ian Marsh and Martyn Ware left the Human League and brought in Glenn Gregory as lead vocalist. The trio also set up the British Electric Foundation (“B.E.F.”) at around the same time. As does the Human League, Heaven 17 hails from Sheffield in the UK.
Heaven 17’s first album, “Penthouse And Pavement” reached #14 in the UK in 1981 and yielded the single, “(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thing”. Their second album, “The Luxury GaP was even more successful; reaching #4 in the UK and #72 in the US.
“How Men Are” was the third album; reaching #12 in the UK in 1984. The album spawned three UK hit singles, including “Sunset Now”, which charted at #24 in the UK and generated some interest in the US where it entered the Dance chart.
Although the band’s most successful years were those between 1981 and 1984, they continued to chart in the UK well into the 90s.
