Today I want to talk about something that struck me hard while listening to the radio. Two news items, one after the other; a piece about coping with the heatwave in our homes, followed immediately by a piece about growing pressure to drill more oil in the North Sea. No connection made between them at all.
That juxtaposition says everything about where we are. We are, I believe, facing a structural predicament — a collective action problem so deep that even now, in 2026, with heat storms battering Europe, we still can't join up the dots between cause and consequence.
I talk through why I think collapse events are now a high probability, why Deep Adaptation (the concept Jem Bendell and I developed) matters more than ever, and what getting "serious and strategic" about adaptation actually looks like — at the individual, household, community, and government level. This isn't about giving up. It's about being honest, and about choosing collective action over collapse.
