In 897 AD, Pope Stephen VI ordered a trial for his predecessor, Pope Formosus—but there was a problem: Formosus was already dead.
So they dug up his corpse, dressed it in papal robes, and put the rotting body on trial in front of horrified bishops. It was called the Cadaver Synod, and yes, it really happened.
They found him guilty, cut off three fingers, and tossed his body in the river.
It was one of the darkest, most bizarre chapters in church history— a literal corpse trial in the name of politics.
