The Hearst Castle was home to William Randolph Hearst, head of one of the world's largest publishing empires. While the grounds were purchased by his father in 1865, the actual castle broke ground in 1919 and Hearst moved in in 1920. He lived there until 1947. It later became owned by the State of California.
The castle is open for tours, as there are at least five different ones available. For this one, I chose the most popular or basic one: the Casa Grande, which included a dining room, billiards room as well as the gardens and two of the pools.
