In 2024, Russian immigrant and U.S. defense contractor Ilya Belouzarov was shot and killed by the FBI in a hotel parking lot. Shootings involving the FBI are incredibly rare, sparking a massive investigation into why a man with a U.S. government security clearance was gunned down hundreds of miles from his home while trying to flee to the border. Belouzarov, who worked for the satellite-imaging company Maxar on a Department of Defense contract, had recently spiraled in the final weeks of his life. He was fired, drained his bank accounts, signed over power of attorney to his teenage son, and vanished. While his son claims Belouzarov was strictly pro-Ukraine and anti-Putin—even sending care packages to Ukrainian troops—a year-long investigation revealed a shocking twist: the FBI had been actively investigating him for espionage. Belouzarov believed he was passing sensitive U.S. information to Ukrainian operatives. However, in a tragic "double blind" espionage plot, those operatives were actually working for Russia. As he attempted to escape to Southern California with the help of a couple he met in a McDonald's parking lot, the FBI intercepted him, resulting in a fatal confrontation.
