More than 1,000 people are now confirmed dead and thousands remain missing after the catastrophic rock-and-ice collapse that triggered flooding across Nepal and Tibet. Before the disaster, a U.S.-backed NASA and USAID program helped monitor Himalayan floods, glacial lakes, and other hazards, while former USAID official Jeremy Konyndyk says eight disaster-risk programs operating in Nepal were canceled amid the dismantling of USAID.
