✍ Since the release of Haute Tension in 2003, the film has been haunted by criticism and controversy. The resemblance to Dean Koontz's novel Intensity is disturbing, and even more so to Yves Simoneau's official television adaptation of this novel in 1997, where the resemblance, in addition to the plot, is also audiovisual.
On his website, Koontz stated that he was aware of the comparison but would not sue "because he found the film so puerile, so disgusting, and so intellectually bankrupt that he didn’t want the association with it that would inevitably come if he pursued an action against the filmmaker."
Alexandre Aja has also acknowledged in interviews (including one I did in person) that he had read Koontz's novel and liked it. The similarity between film and novel would have been very close if the producer, Luc Besson, had not made Aja rewrite the ending to force a twist as in The Sixth Sense.
