I've been asked a few times recently if I watch anime and what my favorite anime is. Of course the answer is usually "I don't watch anymore." Still, I never really thought about what my favorite would be if I had to pick from the ones I've seen when I did watch. So rather than tell people what my answer is, I figured I'd make another music video to show off my favorite anime.
"Guyver, The Bio Boosted Armor."
Now it goes without saying that there's multiple forms of media representing the Guyver. As far as I'm aware, there is a very old OVA of the Guyver, then another old full season of Guyver. A 2005 (much better quality all around) anime of Guyver, and two live action movies. All of the cartoons follow basically the same storyline which is somewhat adapted from the mangas. However, the live action movies that were made have little to nothing to do with the cartoon plots.
Basic synopsis; At the end of the Triassic period, The Advents obliterated the dinosaurs from Earth using a meteorite in order to make way for their new projects, "The Zoanoids." Zoanoids are powerful beasts residing within human disguises, and the Zoalords that would follow them could mind control all of the Zoanoids. Still unsatisfied with their creations, the Advents created humans meant for war, and then created "Guyver Units" to amplify the natural abilities of humans. Unlike the Zoanoids, the Guyver units could not be mind controlled due to the control unit encased in their heads. Guyver zero rebelled against his creators which resulted the advents determining that the experiments on Earth were a failure. They opted to use another meteorite to destroy Earth and return to their homeworld, but the Zoalord known as "Arkanfel" prevented them from doing so.
So left alone on Earth, humans evolved and created their own societies.
The Zoanoids and Zoalords continued to operate in secrecy under the guise of a big corporation known as "Kronos." The anime storyline picks up once Kronos discovers three Guyver units appearing suddenly on Earth. In their struggle to contain the Guyver units, one escapes their custody and lands in the hands of "Sho Fukimachi" who it then bonds with. Sho has no knowledge of Kronos or the Guyver Units and wishes only to live a normal teenage life with his friends and family, but he is hunted relentlessly like a dog throughout the entire series.
I loved watching every bit of Guyver media I could get my hands on when I was a teenager. The storyline is so intriguing to me because it deals with very ambiguous god like beings creating human life as we know it, and also a suit of armor which is a living weapon. Every aspect of its body is meant for combat. The crystals on its head provide 360 range of view. The control unit on its forehead prevents mind control from Zoaloards, the blades places on its elbows vibrate at an extremely high frequency and thus can cut straight through solid steel. The crystal upon its belt allows the unit to levitate. The crystals within its mouth can emit sub sonic frequencies which can obliterate Zoanoids. And finally, the greatest weapon of them all is "The Mega Smasher" located in their chests. It collects solar and magnetic energy from the proximity and releases it in a giant projectile of destructive energy. The Guyver units are completely unstoppable and borderline unkillable. The show is so exciting to watch because you the audience have no idea what the Guyvers are capable of. You learn more and more about its capabilities through the eyes of Sho Fukamachi. Just when you think the suit has exhausted its limitations, we discover yet another feature the suit and the host are capable of! I hope I've managed to captivate you with this description.
