Where to even begin…
Stockholm syndrome is an emotional response which happens to some abuse and hostage victims when they have positive feelings toward an abuser or captor. The victim begins to sympathise with their abductor and there is potential for other positive feelings towards them like the desire to protect them and empathy for their situation, especially if there was a distinct lack of such positive emotions in the victims world.
Hostages who are dependent on their hostage-taker for basic needs learn a new way of thinking in order to survive - clinging to any kindness the abuser shows as a coping mechanism.
Abuse can be very confusing for children, who are just starting to learn for themselves what is right and what is wrong. A strong adult presence is meant to be a guiding light for children, so when that power is abused the child will not develop the correct responses to abusive behaviour and will most likely suffer in later life because of this.
PLOT (Spoilers)High school girl Satou Matsuzaka befriends a mysterious little girl named Shio who has lost her memory, and immediately becomes highly attached to her. After finding Shio who was abandoned by her mother, they both agree to live together in Satou’s apartment - but when Shio wants to go outside she is reprimanded and told that the outside world is dangerous and scary. What started as an arrangement to make each other happy, turns into locked doors and murder in order to keep the outside world at bay. All the while Shio has been listed as a missing person by her brother and other broken people seek to find the little girl on the missing posters.
My thoughts (Spoilers)Happy Sugar Life is a controversial anime love story/psychological horror between two young people, both experiencing love for the first time following awful, disturbing past traumas and abuse. Straight away I just want to say that this is not about sex. I do not in any way sympathise with the perverted side to HSL and this is not really a ‘ship’ it’s an artistic representation of the mentally abused and scarred cast and their individual paths on the road to find what they believe to be ‘happiness’ - even when they becomes just as twisted as those who mistreated them to begin with. HSL reminds me a lot of ‘Flowers In The Attic’ and of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ - in both of these books/plays/films the characters are young adults, just starting out, reaching for something more than the hand they’ve been dealt. I believe that ‘Stockholm syndrome’ has a large part to play in the attraction between Satou and Shio - with her memory loss and the attentiveness Satou provides, Shio is very much influenced by the ‘caring’ nature of her captor - anyone who believes otherwise should be reminded that Satou locks Shio in the house and tells her that the outside world is a scary, dangerous place and that she would only be safe inside the house. At the end the ‘Romeo and Juliet’ suicide really kicks in with them both willingly throwing themselves off a burning building so they can die ‘together’ - but the difference is that Satou has an epiphany and at the last moment saves Shio by shielding her from hitting the ground with her own body. In the end it is like they have become one soul and Satou lives on inside of Shio. If we ignore the more disturbing parts of this very very strange yet compelling anime, that could be considered very beautiful. This anime is listed as a psychological horror not a vanilla love story and I tried to make it show all the horrors as well as the ‘happiness’ that the characters believe they have achieved. From the very beginning all the characters were taught what ‘love’ is in very different ways - Satou’s aunt tells her that the many men who come to their house and hurt her in many ways are just the many different ‘flavours’ of love. Shio’s mother defends her and her brother from the abusive father - and yet when Shio wants to venture outside her mother hits her and realises she is becoming the same as her husband is - the reason she tells Shio to leave. I’m not sure where to start with Taiyō, the teacher, the thugs or the nameless painter - except to say that if you like deep, truthful, sometimes ugly character exploration please give this anime a watch - it’s like character crack!
