Happy National Day Vietnam oi!

Today Vietnam marks the 77th anniversary of Uncle Ho's declaration of independence from France in Hanoi's Ba Dinh Square. It was September 2nd 1945 and World War II was ending. Ho's men had collaborated in the jungles of Northern Vietnam with US intelligence officers in the fight against Japanese forces . They expected a sympathetic hearing from the world community to their independence call. It didn't happen. It took 30 more years of fighting for Ho's 1945 declaration to become a reality.

Spirit, toughness, determination and good humour in the face of adversity, are remarkable Vietnamese qualities. They're qualities you'll encounter all over the country - including in these fishermen on An Bang Beach outside Hoi An.
